0 5 Fun Summer Workouts

So we’ve hit summer fitness seasons and disaster has struck. Maybe you didn’t stick to your “bikini body in 5 weeks,” / “Summer Body” variation plan. And on top of that – let’s face it – although you may have more free time now, it still doesn’t necessarily mean you want to spend that time working out. Have no fear! Summer gives way to a range of activities that can count as unconventional exercise so you can have fun and get a workout in, without feeling like you’re actually doing one (Can’t guarantee this sentence depending on what you choose to do!) I’ve compiled a list of fun activities that you can do out in the sunshine (or not,) either with some friends or on your lonesome.

1. Go on a hike

Preferably somewhere that’s got an amazing destination at the end, like a rock pool you can dip your toes in, or maybe even a nice pub to eat back all those calories you’ve burned. If you live somewhere hill-y this is especially easy, but if not, take this chance for a little road trip to some different scenery! Whether you choose to do a long, easier walk, or a more difficult one, walking is great steady state exercise. Just remember to hydrate!

2. Summer BBQ Activities

Aside from being a chance to gorge yourself on delicious food (and probably drink), BBQs also give way to a range of surprisingly active activities. Join in if there’s a football kicking around and activities like Frisbee, volleyball, or even games such as Piggy In the Middle can work up a sweat and keep you from eating your own weight in ketchup.

3. Water activities

Like with the hike, this may require a bit of traveling but will be well worth it. Research an area that specialises in water sports and boating and plan a visit. Kayaking or rowing are great ways of getting some exercise in whilst still spending time with friends (as long as you’re both willing to do equal amounts of work) or give surfing/windsurfing a try! Try and pick a nice day to go and you’ll also be able to get a killer tan whilst doing something a bit different.

4. Go for a run

Okay, this one isn’t necessarily restricted to summer at all – and most runners would scoff at this concept. But deny it all you like, it’s just nicer running outside when it’s sunny and bright. This is particularly for those who don’t run often, as you might find you change your mind after a lovely run on a gorgeous day.

5. Pay a visit to the beach

A lot of people think of beaches as relaxing, but it doesn’t have to be that way (okay, that doesn’t sound particularly appealing, but hear me out). Swimming in the sea, whether it’s just paddling all day, jumping through waves or swimming out to the life raft, is great exercise. And for those who are really keen, running on sand is notoriously difficult – and notoriously great for you!

Of course, there are so many more activities you can take part in, depending on the area that you’re in. If you’re lucky enough to be going on holiday, a little research can enlighten you to a local adventure park, archery course, rock climbing arena, or even scuba diving area. Hopefully this will inspire you to have a look around and try something new and fun that will also keep you active!

What are some of your favourite summer activities?
