Using the Catalogue

How the data is arranged:

The contents of the catalogue cards were typed into a spreadsheet with columns for author, title, class and the cross-references on the backs of the cards which includes subjects, joint authors/editors, etc. You can search for author by name or first letter. You can search for title by the beginning of the title or by first letter. Within the listings, author names, class and subject (cross-references) are hyperlinked. The list of subjects includes joint authors (j.a.) and joint editors (j. ed.), it may also contain "duplicate" subjects - these will be dealt with once the data is complete, in the meantime you will need to follow all the links to see all the books. If you are looking for books with special features (eg bibliographies, portraits, etc), do your initial search (eg class or subject) and then use your browser to do a "Find on this page:..." and look for the relevant abbreviation (eg bibliog or port). If you wish to search on part of a title but don't know how it starts, use the Full Text Search.

Credits

The on-line catalogue has been made possible by a donation of £3,000 (the result of the annual fund raising in conjuction with "The Catholic Woman of the Year" presentation) and by the huge amount of work done by volunteers.

History

As those who have visited the library know, the library catalogue is a manual card index. In about March 2000 volunteers started rekeying the card index into a spreadsheet. They completed their work mid 2003 and then the proof-reading started. By November 2003 about a third of the catalogue had been checked and uploaded to the Internet. The Library then closed pending its move to new premises. By November 2007 the Library was successfully installed in its new home and the proof-reading restarted. It was another two years before the proof-reading was completed and the whole of the book catalogue was made available on-line.
